September 17, 2025Travel Prep Like A Pro

As a frequent international traveler and professional planner of many grand adventures for clients, here are some tips I’ve learned that can help you prep like a pro for your next trip!

Start Planning 12-18 Months in Advance

The journey to your dream trip starts now! Decide on a destination, dates, and an overall budget. Cruises go on sale around two years in advance, while flights and hotels open up for booking around the 12-month mark.

Open a Travel Savings Account

Always know what’s in your vacation fund and add to it over time. Set up automatic transfers from your paycheck to make savings easy and stress-free. The sooner you start, the more you’ll save!

Meet with a Travel Advisor

There are so many benefits to working with a travel advisor! Not only will you get expert insight for your trip, but you might also even unlock special pricing and perks like room upgrades, onboard credit for cruises, special amenities, and more!

Set Up Flight Notifications

I recommend Google Flights for tracking airfare prices. You can receive alerts when the price for your preferred route goes down, so you’ll know when to book the flights.

Choose Centrally Located Hotels

I always search reviews for the keyword “location” to make sure my hotel is in a good area. Being within walking distance to attractions, restaurants, and public transportation can save time and reduce the expense of ride-shares and car services getting around the city.

Check on International Cell Service

When you’re traveling abroad, make sure that your mobile phone plan covers international text and data. Some carriers have temporary international add-ons you can purchase for the duration of your trip. Use internet-based calling services if you need to make a voice call while traveling.

Review Credit Card Benefits

Most credit cards (including the PEFCU Visa® credit card!) have some travel benefits built in when you use that card for your travel purchases. A common benefit you’ll find is a damage and collision waiver on rental cars, and emergency assistance if your card is lost or stolen when you’re away from home.

Enjoy 2-for-1 Activities

Choosing excursions is one of my favorite parts of planning trips for myself and others! I love to look for activities that have multiple features – such as a walking tour that includes food and drinks. Your tour guides are also an excellent resource for getting insider knowledge and recommendations for the area.

Use Your Credit Card to Earn Points

Not only is using a credit card abroad more secure, but you can always earn points for all the purchases you make! These points can be redeemed for cash back, merchandise, and more. It’s like giving yourself a little bonus every time you swipe. Vacation fund, here we come!
